Indian Government To File Case Against EU To WTO

Published: 23-Nov-2009

Against illegal seizure of high quality Indian drugs at ports during transit

The Economic times has reported that India is planing to file a case against the European Union at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). India plans to go to WTO for 'wrongful' seizure of high quality Indian drugs at its ports during transit.

The EU has assured India to send a team of custom officials to India to solve the issue. Despite the assurance, the country is in preparations to file the case.

A commerce department official told ET, “We have started working on the documentation required in the case. We are likely to be in a position to file the case at the WTO by February. Brazil and India are likely to file a joint case against the EU on the issue.”

Reportedly, Brazil along with India is also planing to file a case as the country has also been at the receiving end of the policies of the customs authorities of the EU countries.

Moreover, These seizures violate the Trips Agreement, which allows generic producers of medicines that may have patents in other countries to be exported to developing countries on public health grounds.
